These 5 Popular Habits That Can Cause Brain Damage

Adopting certain lifestyles can significantly threaten our brain. Regularly displaying such unhealthy habits can deny our brains important nutrients or they may even rapidly kill brain cells. This risk may result in causing mental disorders like depression or anxiety, as well physical ailments like Alzheimer’s, stroke, epilepsy or on a severe not even cancer.

Even if your mind is at rest, your physical brain could still be suffering a lot. Mental disorders are largely a result of genetics, diet and lifestyle and they play a huge part in how regulated and calm your brain activity can be.

Here are some of the dangerous habits that damage your brain  and you should stop them immediately if you want to be mentally and physically healthy.

1. Don’t skip breakfast

There is a reason why breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. If you skip breakfast, it may result in low sugar levels and it can be very damaging to the brain. You brain needs more energy than any other organ in the body and it takes up to 20% of the total amount of glucose available in the body.

2. Sleep deprivation

It’s well known that sleep deprivation can make you feel slow and forgetful the next day. Insufficient sleep can result in your neurons unable to function properly. This can lead to cause mental lapses which can affect both your work and relationships. On a scary note, your reflex action and senses also become dull and it’s likely you may invite an dangerous activity your way.

3. Overeating

Studies have revealed that there is a direct relation between obesity and dementia. The researchers suspect that obesity occurs when we lack proper nutrition in our body which leads to conditions like overeating to compensate the body’s need for minerals and vitamins. That’s why even if you feel you eat a lot, you could still be starving your brain.

4. Smoking

Through centuries, there have been  plenty of research done on the damages caused by smoking. Smoking damages cell membranes and neural viability in the areas of the brain that manages coordination, balance and both fine and gross motor skills. It also causes thinning of the cortex where major processes of memory, language and perception occur.

5. Dehydration

Our bodies are made up of 70% water and it is necessary to conduct every critical bodily functions which includes brain functions. If you have two hours of working sessions without water, cognitive decline may occur. According to studies, dehydration has its impacts to disable coordination, complex problem solving and attention problem.
